Coming Soon A 3D Printed Car Coming Soon A 3D Printed Car In May of 1903, auto enthusiast Dr. Horatio Jackson, his mechanic Sewall Crocker, and his dog Bud, set out from San Francisco to New York City in a Winton car. They completed the first ever cross-country road trip in a motor car in 2 months and 9 days, using 800 gallons of gasoline. In the summer of 2015, teenagers Cody Kor and Tyler Kor, along with their dog Cupid, will re-enact Horatios drive, taking just 2 days and using 10 gallons of bio-fuel in Urbee 2, the first 3D printed hybrid car.The two teens are sons of Jim Kor, the president of Winnipeg-based engineering group Kor EcoLogic, and Urbee 2 is the second prototype of Urbee, a self-initiated vehicle research project that he started with his gruppe of designers and engineers in 1996. We used to work on interest-driven research projects and most of them were focused on energy efficiency because of my personal interest, says Kor, who believes powering cars on renewable ene rgy is vital to our civilizations survival. Urbee has been an offshoot of all those projects.Eco-Friendly VehicleOriginally designed for the 2010 Automotive X-Prize Competition, Kors vision was to build the greenest and most practical car ever made. A mechanical engineer from the University of Manitoba with three decades of experience designing farm machinery, Kor was inspired by Dr. Paul MacCreadys strategy to use all the technology thats available when solving a problem. When we thought of designing the greenest car possible, we decided to use whatever we could find. If a fuel-cell would make it more efficient we would use that or a piston engine.The engineering team at Urbee used ABS pbelastungic and fused deposition modeling to fabricate the cars light and strong body. Image Kor EcoLogicKor and his team decided to build Urbee as a gasoline/ethanol hybrid car. It uses electrical energy stored on batteries to power electric motors and chemical energy from ethanol to power the inte rnal combustion engine. At city speeds, the car runs on pure electric and at highway speeds, it uses the ethanol-fueled IC engine. The car is capable of reaching more than 200 mpg and the goal for Urbee 2 is 300 mpg. Its batteries can be charged using a voreingestellt wall plug at home or parking lot.Urbee minimizes the amount of energy required to move forward, through efficient aerodynamics, incorporating three versus four wheels. We wanted to get the force at the tire on the road as low as possible, says Kor. The three wheels improve the aerodynamics, explains Kor, highlighting that the most resistance will be where the tires poke out at the body. We have only three slots where tires poke through and that causes the least resistance. From 3D Printer to RoadTo make Urbee as sustainable as possible throughout the design and manufacturing processes, the team considered building the prototype body panels using fiberglass, but that would have meant a long and labor-intensive process. Stratasys, their key sponsor, offered to make it using a 3D printer. We completed the body in clay, scanned it onto the computer, simulated the aerodynamics, and then approached Stratasys to 3D print it, Kor recalls.While the original Urbee only had its exterior 3D printed, Urbee 2 will have its interior 3D printed as well. Image Kor EcoLogicWorking with RedEye, an on-demand 3D printing facility, the engineering team at Urbee used ABS plastic and fused deposition modeling to fabricate a light and strong body for the eco-friendly car. Several major body panels were built within weeks.Kor was awed by the speed of 3D printing, To have body parts within weeks is pretty fast. The alternate would have been months using fiber glass and we couldnt make the small parts as we wanted them to be. According to him, additive manufacturing processes made it easy and efficient to make design changes in the Urbee along the way. I realized that when you design for a 3D printer alone and not for produ ction processes like casting or extrusion, the processes dont dictate the design, the parts can be changed and be dramatically better, says Kor.After achieving technical success with Urbee in 2013, the Kor Ecologic team initiated the second prototype, Urbee 2, last spring. While the original Urbee only had its exterior 3D printed, Urbee 2 will have its interior 3D printed as well, except the engine and chassis. Everything you see and touch would be 3D printed which is almost 50-60% of the car, says Kor.Production GoalsOn the business side, Kor adds, they have patented certain technology worldwide, so that they could license it other car companies or try to build smaller volumes of the car and sell it in future. After the second prototype, we would need a pilot-run of 10 or so units, and then an initial production run could be considered. We visualize an inexpensive car like the Beetle or Model T for this century.Currently, Kors team is using crash simulation software to streamlin e the safety features, and also waiting for more funding to complete the second prototype. We need a year to design, another year to build and test it. The agencies Ive worked with run the gamut from tech-savvy to the tech illiterate, which has been a unique experience in terms of realizing how technology can best serve diverse audiences. Some of my projects can be as simple as a drag-and-drop game to something as complicated as creating a satellite equipment simulator. Curiosity Explores the Red Planet Curiosity Explores the Red Planet Carrying the most advanced payload of scientific gear ever used on the Martian surface, the roter planet Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity Rover launched in November is about 10 times larger in mass and capability than the earlier MER rovers that arrived on Mars in 2004.The rovers robotic obere extremitt (RA) is a critical mechanism to the MSLs mission. It acquires, processes, and handles samples from the surface of Mars and delivers 5 of the 12 science instruments. The robot arm, with five degrees of freedom, is very similar to robotic arms used on earth, but it is designed to survive the large temperature changes in space.Made mostly of titanium, it is lighter than steel but has similar thermal expansion properties as the steel bearings in its joints when the temperature swings from about -110 degrees C at night to +50 degrees C during the day. Many engineering improvements were made over the last two rovers to cr eate a new robotic arm capable of carrying more instruments with expanded capabilities and surviving a lifetime seven times longer than any previous in-situ planetary mission.Larger to Carry More InstrumentsMDA Information Systems, Inc. developed the MSLs arm and has designed and built every other robotic arm successfully deployed and operated on the surface of Mars since the Viking landers. Rius Billing, director of engineering,notes some of the most important differences between the new robotic arms and those from the MER (Spirit and Opportunity) and Phoenix programs.The titanium arm has two joints at the shoulder, one at the elbow, and two at the wrist. Each joint moves with a cold-tolerant actuator custom-built for the mission.Not only is the MSL rover larger, but the RA is larger and heavier as well. It carries five instruments on its turret. In plus-rechnen to an MAaHLI microscopic imaging camera and an alpha particle X-ray spectrometer, an arm-mounted drill is capable of capt uring rock samples from the Martian surface.Billing says the Curiositys robot needs to provide pressure. The instruments and drilling tools on the end of the arm are now larger to obtain better samples, he says.On the MER, robotic arms touched the Mars surface but didnt apply pressure. The robot lifted and lowered equipment into place. On the MSL, the robot not only places instruments, but also provides loading for equipment like a drill.Another new instrument carried by the RA is a Chimera rock crusher that sifts and crushes dirt and rock removed from the ground by the drill. It uses gravity, vibrations, and coordinated arm movements to deliver sorted samples to rover-mounted science instruments.This image shows the arm in a partially extended position. The arm has a reach of about 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) from the front of the rover body. Photo NASAFinally, the RA carries a Dust Removal Tool, a brush that cleans rock surfaces for imaging. A brush was present on MER that scored and po lished surfaces a bit, but the brush on MSL provides a more gentle touch so sample gathering and acquisition can be done with other tools on the arm.Billing notes that handling the heavier arm was more complicated since it could no longer be lifted by a single person. Designing, making, and testing mechanical ground support equipment became almost a project unto itself.Efficient Cable SystemContaining more instruments, the RA needed a way to deliver more electrical signals each with custom voltage and current requirements. A new proprietary flex cable was designed to accommodate the almost 1,000 wires that provide independent signals traversing the 2-m-long robot arm.A flat paper thin flex conductor cable on the MLS RA is an efficient use of mass and volume. The flex cable is unique in that it spans from the rover bulkhead to the instrument turret in a single piece, and about 10 m of flat flex cabling is required to get the range of motion required in the 2-m long arm. The flat cabl e design also offers thermal benefits over using round wire since it is more flexible in cold temperatures.Robotic arm cabling on MER only required about one-fourth as many conductors. On Curiosity, about 600 conductors support the actuators and the rest support the instruments.Saving Space and MassSince the MSL RA and the equipment it carries are so massive (more than 100 kg), a complex dual-purpose lock and re-stow system helps keep mass and volume down and provides protection in multiple modes.During launch, the arm is tightly locked by a caging mechanism so it is capable of surviving landing loads of over 20 g. After deployment on the Mars surface, the same caging system was designed to passively re-stow and protect the arm and instruments to survive loads up to 8 g during rover driving maneuvers.This was an interesting design problem according to Billing, since the titanium arm mounts to an aluminum panel on the front of the rover, with a vastly different CTE. It was important that the caging system not over-constrain or bind the RA during large temperature swings.Their solution was to fully constrain the instrument turret in 6DOF (degrees of freedom)at launch, and only constrain the elbow in directions needed to protect the actuators and structure, allowing the arm to expand and contract relative to the rover front panel, Billing says.Keeping Dirt OutProtecting the latching mechanisms, flex spools, and cabling against rock, dirt, and sand pebbles is critical on the MSL arm since the system contains a large drill and a rock crusher and tends to get very dusty, says Billing.Phenolic seals were included at each rotating interface entering and exiting the flex spools, and their protection was verified with life testing to ensure that dirt couldnt get between the layers of flex cable, causing abrasion of the outermost protective layers over time. They also designed large enough dimensional tolerances so dust wouldnt stick.MSL is expected to land on Mars in Au gust 2012, and the newly designed systems put to test. White women in particular rated textured hair as less beautiful, less sexy/attractive, and less professional than smooth hair.Whats more, the study found, black women experience more anxiety around hair is sues and spend more time on their hair than their white counterparts.Research presented at an Academy of Management meeting in 2016, by professors at the University of British Columbias Sauder School of Business, found that many women in leadership positions are blonde. Among female CEOs of SP 500 companies (admittedly a small sample size), that number is 48%. But only 2% of male CEOs in the SP 500 are blonde, according to a previous study.The UBC researchers explained in the presentation that blonde women leaders may come across as warmer and more attractive - and therefore more socially acceptable - than brunettes.Facial hair can communicate confidence - or it can be inappropriateFacial hair in the workplace presents its own set of challenges.A 2014 New York Times article reports that facial hair is back in style in business settings - but those who sport it have to learn to get the look just right. This could be a way to give back to the same mission they have known most of their lives, as well as, a means to earn aleidher source of stable income.Although those are admirable and understandable reasons to pursue federal employment, I have encountered several people who are not fully aware of the rules and often believe myths that float around about getting hired. While working as both a transition co unselor and Transition Assistance Program instructor over the past six years, I have seen many highly skilled veterans who give up after receiving notices that they were, not best qualified. Further, many feel that the process becomes too frustrating and simply give up on their goals and dreams.After serving our Nation and obtaining highly sought after skills such as loyalty, integrity and kollektiv work, any employer, including the Federal Government, would benefit greatly from hiring more vets.In an effort to assist those veterans, military spouses or anyone else who would like help with lifting the veil that is the federal hiring system, here are 5 myths that I have often come across in my workI have veterans preference so, I will easily get hired.Although a person who has worn the uniform may have a preference for some jobs, they MUST be qualified for the position FIRST before veterans preference can even be applied. Additionally, there could be several other veterans who are ju st as qualified. (When all veterans competing are best qualified, one doesnt have preference over the other based on disability statusa non-disabled vet in gold can be hired over a 30% disabled vet also in the same category.)It is important to ensure that it is clear to the hiring manager that all qualifications are met including experience, education and certifications. Also of importance is reading the job announcement in its entirety because leaving one item out could mean the application is considered incomplete. I have personally seen people lose an opportunity because they did not follow all of the instructions.My resume is 10 pages long but that is OK because this is for a federal job.In recent years, it has become more widely known that a federal resume is very different from a resume in the civilian sector. However, it is often taught that a federal resume can be 7 or 8 pages, as long as it has information that is applicable to the job. I have recently learned from a panel of hiring managers and Mrs. Troutman that the optimal length of a federal resume is actually 3-5 pages. Much like civilian sector professionals, human resources specialist and hiring managers are busy and do not have the time to sift through all of those pages. It is vital to work with someone either on or off of the local installation (i.e. Family Support Center or American Job Center) to customize the resume content so that it is concise and relevant. They can assist with ensuring that the years of specialized experience that is required for most of the jobs is evident within those 3-5 pages.I am going to include all of my training and certifications (i.e. HVAC NCOA) on my resume even though the job I am applying for is different than the job I had on active duty.In some instances, there may be some transferability within the training and certifications obtained during military service (i.e. leadership within NCOA (Non-Commissioned Officer Academy) Training or specific experience within heating ventilation and air conditioning certifications (HVAC). On the other hand, it is a good idea to explain these skills and spell out all acronyms, as it may not be completely logical to everyone reading the resume. Each branch of service, every installation and even every unit has language that is specific to that entity and may not translate well. It is always better to eliminate any confusion.I was a major and in the military for 10 years. I should qualify for a GS-13.This is a myth that has disappointed many of the men and women I have worked with in my career. Unfortunately, having a certain rank does not automatically translate to a certain grade in the federal system. Federal jobs are rated based on the applicants ability to show years of experience within a specified area and/or having the educational background that is necessary as well. The managerial and organizational skills that are earned when reaching certain ranks could be impressive during an interview or can be placed on a resume. However, the main thing to remember is that the rank is not a factor when seeking the qualifications of an applicant.I submitted my application over a month ago I must not be good enough for this jobHold on now Remember, patience is an important virtue in any job search. When applying for federal positions, there are times when a double konserve of that patience may be needed. Every agency within the federal system is different and the time it takes to hear back varies widely. I have seen people receive a call for an interview a full year after applying, as well as those who have gotten a call the very next day. I would never advise anyone to put all of their hopes into one job but I would encourage anyone who is really interested in working for the government to call upon their resiliency training and dont give up Keep checking the system, call the number on the announcement for updates and try networking within that agency, if that is a possibility.Th e misinformation and myths that seem to stick around over the years unfortunately deters some very talented and skilled individuals from even clicking apply. Therefore, it is important to seek help and accurate information often. Yes, it can be a great deal of work to go after a federal job but much like serving in the military, anything worth having does not come easy.Andrea M.
